The Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek or also call Kanchenjugna Base Camp Trek extended to Okthang (Yalung base Camp) via Miring La is one of Nepal’s most rewarding Himalayan trails, taking adventurers deep into the eastern Himalayas. The name “Kanchenjunga” translates to “crystal clear” in Nepali. At 8,586 meters, Mount Kanchenjunga is the third-highest mountain in the world, revered as the “Five Treasures of the Great Snow”—representing gold, silver, precious stones, grain, and holy scriptures.
Situated in the far northeast of Nepal, on the border with Sikkim (India), Kanchenjunga is uniquely positioned so that its breathtaking views can also be admired from India, Bhutan, and Tibet.
The trekking route passes through the picturesque Arun Valley, regarded as one of the most beautiful trekking regions in Nepal. A highlight of the journey is the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area, which spans 2,035 square kilometers and shelters a remarkable diversity of flora and fauna. Wildlife enthusiasts may encounter species such as the Himalayan black bear, musk deer, red panda, wild boar, snow leopard, and many others.
Trekkers are treated to an ever-changing landscape, ranging from subtropical forests and river valleys to alpine meadows, glacial moraines, and rugged rocky slopes. The route offers spectacular panoramic views of the towering Himalayan giants, including Everest (8,848m), Lhotse (8,516m), Makalu (8,481m), and, of course, Kanchenjunga (8,586m) itself.
Beyond the natural beauty, the Kanchenjunga region is culturally rich, home to a mix of ethnic communities such as the Sherpa, Rai, Limbu, and Gurung. This provides trekkers with a unique opportunity to engage with diverse traditions, hospitality, and ways of life.

The Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek is graded as Moderate to Challenging, ideal for adventure enthusiasts with a moderate level of fitness. The trek spans around 120 km over 14–22 days, with daily walks of 5–6 hours on average. The highest point, North Kanchenjunga Base Camp (Pangpema), sits at 5,143 m (16,873 ft) as well as High passes Sele (4480m) & Senion La pass (4660m)
No prior trekking experience is required; however, 3 months of preparation involving cardio and leg-strength training is highly recommended. The trail includes stone steps, gradual ascents and descents, and uneven terrain, but it does not require any technical climbing skills.
The main challenge lies in adapting to high altitude, so proper acclimatization, hydration, and rest are essential. With the right mindset and preparation, trekkers can complete this rewarding journey—enjoying breathtaking Himalayan views, serene trails, and the rich culture of Kirat communities along the way.
During the Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek, accommodation is in tea houses or Camping with basic rooms/shelter, shared bathrooms, clean bedding, and warm blankets (sleeping bag provided by Ghumnajaau)

Health and safety are a top priority on the Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek. Our itineraries include acclimatization days to prevent altitude sickness, first-aid kits are carried, and emergency evacuation is available if needed.
Key considerations:
Altitude sickness: The trek reaches over 5143m (16873 ft). Gradual ascent, rest days, and hydration help prevent acute mountain sickness (AMS).
Weather: Himalayan weather is unpredictable. Dress in layers, carry waterproof clothing, and wear sturdy footwear for changing conditions.
Trail conditions: Expect steep - slope ascents, rocky paths, high pass and river crossings. Use trekking poles for stability and follow guide instructions.
Hydration & nutrition: Drink plenty of safe water (use purification tablets or filters) and eat balanced meals/snacks to maintain energy levels.
Sun protection: Strong UV exposure at high altitudes requires sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat. Reapply sunscreen regularly.
Emergency preparedness: Be aware of evacuation procedures. Carry travel insurance that covers high-altitude trekking and medical emergencies.
By following these precautions, trekkers can safely enjoy the stunning Himalayan scenery and cultural experiences while minimizing risks.
Yes, all treks include licensed guides and trained porters to ensure safety, provide cultural insights, and assist with luggage.

The best time to trek to Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek is during Spring (March–May) and Autumn (September–November), when weather is stable, skies are clear, and mountain views are spectacular.
Spring: Mild temperatures, clear skies, and vibrant rhododendron blooms along the trail.
Autumn: Dry weather, excellent visibility, and comfortable daytime temperatures (nights can be colder at higher altitudes).
These seasons also reduce the risk of rain, landslides, and avalanches. While trekking is possible in summer or winter, expect rain, snow, colder temperatures, and more challenging trail conditions at higher altitudes. Always check weather forecasts before your trek.
The itinerary serves as a guideline, but may be modified due to weather, health, or unforeseen circumstances. Safety is always our priority.
While some flexibility is possible, the trek completion schedule must generally be maintained. Guides will recommend the best alternatives to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience while staying close to the original plan.

Unfortunately, our Kanchenjunga trek had to be cancelled due to severe weather conditions and flooding in Nepal, especially across the eastern region. Heavy rains over 4th & 5th October caused major disruptions and tragic loss of lives in Ilam — our deepest condolences to the affected families. Though our trip couldn’t continue, we are truly grateful to Ghumnajaau and Nir for their sincere efforts, care, and support throughout. You did your best in very difficult circumstances. We will definitely return to Nepal and complete the Kanchenjunga Trek in the future.
