Trip Facts

Overview

The Barun Valley Trek is a pristine and less-explored journey that takes trekkers deep into the heart of Makalu-Barun National Park, at the base of Mt. Makalu (8,481m) — the world’s fifth-highest peak. Located in the Sankhuwasabha district of eastern Nepal, this hidden Himalayan paradise offers untouched natural beauty, far from crowded trails. The trek reveals a dramatic contrast of landscapes — cascading waterfalls, deep gorges, dense rhododendron forests, and high alpine meadows blooming with colorful wildflowers.

As you ascend toward Yangle Kharka (3,600m), the trail passes through uninhabited wilderness, where camping under the shadow of towering peaks brings you closer to nature. The region is rich in biodiversity, home to rare wildlife such as the red panda, snow leopard, musk deer, and over 440 bird species. With minimal human presence and no major infrastructure, the Barun Valley remains a living sanctuary — often referred to as a ‘living laboratory’ by scientists.

Ideal for trekkers seeking solitude, adventure, and a deep connection with nature, the Barun Valley Trek promises peace, raw beauty, and a true wilderness experience unlike anywhere else in Nepal.
