Overview

The North Annapurna Base Camp Trek is a thrilling journey into one of the least-explored areas of the Annapurna region. Unlike the popular Annapurna Sanctuary trail, this route takes adventurers to the northwest face of Annapurna I (8,091m)—the first 8,000m peak ever climbed in human history by Maurice Herzog and Louis Lachenal in 1950.

This trek offers not only raw Himalayan beauty but also a chance to step back in time, passing through remote Magar villages, pristine forests, and wild alpine landscapes where camping becomes an essential part of the adventure. Along the way, trekkers are rewarded with breathtaking close-up views of Annapurna I, Nilgiri, Dhaulagiri, and other towering peaks that dominate the skyline.

Since the trail is relatively new—explored in 2019 by the Annapurna Rural Municipality with support from TAAN and ACAP—it remains an untouched gem. Perfect for trekkers seeking cultural encounters, wilderness camping, and an off-the-beaten-path Himalayan experience, this trek culminates in an unforgettable overnight stay at the North Annapurna Base Camp (4,190m), where the mighty Himalayas rise dramatically above.

Itinerary

Your journey begins with a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara along the Prithvi Highway, following the Trishuli River. The road winds past green hills, terraced fields, and small towns. By tourist bus, it takes 6–7 hours; if you prefer a quicker option, a domestic flight takes only 25 minutes. For those wishing to push further, a private jeep can take you directly to Beni in about 8–9 hours. Once in Pokhara, you can stroll around the lakeside, enjoy the views of Machhapuchhre and Annapurna South, and prepare for the trekking days ahead.

Location: Pokhara (822m)
Duration: 5–6 hrs drive (or 25 min flight)
Meal: Dinner on your own
Accommodation: Hotel in Pokhara

After breakfast, we begin the drive westward, passing Kande, Nayapul, Kusma, and Parbat before reaching Baglung in about 3 hours. The road up to Baglung is fairly smooth, but beyond that, it becomes a rough, off-road journey. From Baglung, we drive through Beni and Tatopani, where we stop for lunch. After Tatopani, the road narrows and climbs steeply along the Kali Gandaki River, passing hydropower construction sites, tunnels, and suspension bridges. After a 5–6 hour drive (115 km) in total, we arrive at Hum Khola (2,890m), the last motorable point. The area has only a very basic teahouse and hydropower office, so we will set up camp and prepare our own dinner.

Location: Hum Khola 2,890m
Duration: 5-6 hrs drive
Meal: Breakfast + Lunch + Dinner
Accommodation: Teahouse/Camping at Hum Khola

Today we start our trek into the wilderness. After breakfast, we ascend gradually, trekking for about 6 hours to reach Busket Mela (3,650m). The trail first leads us to Futfutey Waterfall, where we pause to admire the cascading water. Continuing on, we reach Sandikharka Shelter for a short rest and snacks. The next landmark is Ghupaphant Shelter, where the cliffs open up to reveal glimpses of Tilicho Peak. From here, it’s another hour of trekking to reach Busket Mela. The campsite lies near a river, our only source of drinking water, so we use purification tablets before use. With no electricity or phone signal here, it’s a true wilderness experience. We pitch tents, prepare dinner, and enjoy the serenity of the high Himalayas.

Location: Busket Mela 3,650m
Duration: 4-5 hours.
Meal: Breakfast + Lunch + Dinner
Accommodation: Teahouse/Camping at Busket Mela

This morning begins with the soothing sound of the nearby river. After breakfast, we set off toward the Campsite at 4,050m, which will be our highest overnight point. The trek is shorter today, about 4 hours (~6 km), but the altitude makes it more demanding. The path is rocky and filled with streams and waterfalls. Along the way, we pass Sun Khola (River of Gold), known for its golden-hued stones. Finally, we reach the open space beside Panchakunda Lake, a sacred spot with five pristine turquoise lakes. Since the actual North Annapurna Base Camp (4,190m) has no camping ground, we stay here instead. Dinner is prepared by our team before we rest under the stars.

Location: Campsite 4050m
Duration: 4 hrs trek (~6 km)
Meal: Breakfast + Lunch + Dinner
Accommodation: Teahouse/Camping

After an early breakfast, we hike about 30 minutes from the campsite to reach the legendary North Annapurna Base Camp (4,190m), where the French expedition led by Maurice Herzog made history in 1950. From here, we enjoy breathtaking views of Annapurna I (8,091m), Nilgiri North, Central, and South, Tilicho Peak (7,134m), Baraha Chuli (7,647m), and Khangsar Kang (Roc Noir, 7,485m). A small Shiva temple and the turquoise Panchakunda Lake add cultural and spiritual significance to the spot. After capturing photos and enjoying the panorama, we retrace our steps back to Hum Khola (5–6 hrs), where a jeep will be waiting. From here, we drive 2 hours to Tatopani and reward ourselves with a hot spring bath.

Location: Annapurna North BC 4,190m
Duration: 6 hrs trek (~11 km) + 2 hrs drive
Meal: Breakfast + Lunch + Dinner
Accommodation: Lodge/Hotel in Tatopani

This morning, you may choose to take another dip in the Tatopani hot springs before breakfast. We then set off on a 4-hour drive (102 km) back to Pokhara. The road winds through Beni and Baglung, giving us one last chance to admire the hills and valleys of the Annapurna region. Upon reaching Pokhara, we check into the hotel, and you can enjoy your evening relaxing at Lakeside or celebrating with your trekking group.

Location: Tatopani 1,190m → Pokhara 822m
Duration: 4 hrs drive (102 km)
Meal: Breakfast
Accommodation: Hotel in Pokhara

After breakfast, we return to Kathmandu. The tourist bus takes 6–7 hours, or you may choose a 25-minute scenic flight. Arriving in Kathmandu, you will be transferred to your hotel. This marks the end of the Annapurna North Base Camp trek, a journey filled with wilderness camping, cultural encounters, and the glory of Annapurna’s north face.

Location: Pokhara 822m → Kathmandu 1,350m
Duration: 5–6 hrs drive / 25 min flight
Meal: Breakfast
Accommodation: Not included (end of trek)
