Located about 22 km southwest of Kathmandu, Chitlang is an ancient Newari settlement in the Makwanpur district of Nepal, forming part of Bagmati Province. Before the construction of the Tribhuwan Rajpath — the first highway connecting Kathmandu with India — Chitlang served as a vital “on-foot highway” for travelers heading toward southern Nepal and India.

Chitlang holds deep historical and archaeological value. An inscription attributed to King Angshubarma found in Tokhel records the establishment of settlements and land grants for shepherds in places like Tokhel, Nulgaun, and Kunchal.

Historians believe these settlers, known as Gopal, were connected to the ancient Gopal Dynasty, a lineage historically associated with cowherds and early rulers of Nepal. These inscriptions provide remarkable insights into the social and political life of early Nepal, reflecting an organized and sophisticated civilization that once thrived here.

Culture and Community Life

The ancient name of Chitlang, Chitrapur, is still remembered in its division into five sections — Chitrapur, Shudhapur, Kolapur, Hastinapur, and Champapur.

The village is predominantly inhabited by Newar, Tamang, and Khas communities. The Chitlang dialect of Nepal Bhasa, including the unique Balami language, is spoken almost exclusively in this area.

Cultural events such as the 12-Year Dance (Barha Barsa Naach), Bhairav and Nahavev Jatra, and Khadga Jatra bring the community together in celebration of their traditions. Remarkably, people from diverse backgrounds live harmoniously here, sharing ceremonies and festivals in a spirit of cooperation and unity.
